265/75/16 tyre opinions?
My 90 CSW with Boost alloys needs 4 new tyres. It has got the original 235/85/16 tyres still on it, they are now 10 years old and starting to crack on the sidewalls.

I was wondering if there is any benefit apart from looks to fitting the larger 265 tyre? The spare on my 90 is a brand new 235/85/16. If I were to fit 4 new 265's but keep the 235 as the spare would that be illegal? Is there any law that states that the spare has to be the same as the roadwheels? I think maybe not, because loads of cars have space savers.

The car is only used mainly for road duties, with a bit of caravan towing and easy green lanes.

Anyone got any pictures of their Landy with 265's on? 2021 Defender 110 X-Dynamic HSE D300 MHEV

You wouldn't pass an MOT with dissimilar tyres but many cars a supplied with a space saver so should be OK.

I have never used my spare, it's now 12 years old.

This is mine with 265 just before I replaced them just because they were old and looking a bit tired.

Have a look here for what various combinations look like. A quick search for 'tyres' will throw up a whole stack of threads for you to have a look at - its a very often discussed topic! Personally I run BF Goodrich all-terrains in 265/75/16 as do many, many others. I think your spare does have to be the same size as your other tyres, although I'm not certain about that. Mine is anyway, but only for the reason that I wanted a full matching set of 5. 2005 Td5 | 90 Station Wagon | Tonga Green

265/75/R16 was a standard fit size for some blingy models, so you won't have any issues.

Personally I prefer 7.50R16 or 235/85/R16. At the end of the day it will make little difference, so go with your preference.

Personally, I would change all five if I were going to change sizes. Not because it's illegal - more because it's just 'wrong'. One of my first purchases for my 110 was a matching spare as the PO was a cheapskate and only bought 4 x 265's.

Mine are General Grabber AT2's fitted to standard Boosts but on 30mm spacers. The tread is just under the arches but the steering lock is superb:

For at least the last 6 years my Disco II has passed every MOT with 265/75x16 BFG Mud T/As on the road wheels and a 245/75x16 Mud T/A as a spare. No tester has ever even looked under the spare wheel cover, and I am not even sure that they're allowed to.

Having said that it would probably be illegal for me actually to use the spare I the event of a flat, but fortunately that has never been put to the test!

No, I don't believe they are. It's not an MoT requirement to even have a spare wheel, IIRC, although if it's easily accessible then they will check it. Darren

I run 265/75s on my 90.

235/85 and 265/75 are almost the same diameter, so if had to run you 235/85 as a spare in an emergency you would be reasonably OK - though obviously not for long periods...

Not sure if the pic will help as I'm running a 2" lift with HD springs (for overlanding load weights) so there is a lot of space between the tyre and wheel arch when unloaded.

How much is a tyre?

£100-150?

How much is your life worth? The life of your family? How much is the life of a stranger worth?

Those 4 round rubber things are all that keeps your vehicle in contact with the ground!

Rubber degrades due to several mechanisms including ageing, oxidisation, exposure to UV, exposure to salt etc etc.

There is I believe an industry standard which says tyres should not be sold if they are 5 or 6 years old.

We have just replaced tyres less then 10 years old because they were showing signs of ageing. Cracks on side wall, cracks between the tread blocks. Plenty of tread left and passed MOT.

Our life's are worth more then a few quids of rubber.

In my opinion change all five tyres, same size, same manufacturer, same tread pattern.

Thanks for all the pictures and opinions. Thumbs Up I know lives depend on tyres, that's why I am changing them, I just wanted to know what the 265 fitted like, as I do feel the 235's look a little weedy.

The reason I ask about keeping the spare is that it is brand new, and not a 10 year old tyre, its never seen the road yet. 2021 Defender 110 X-Dynamic HSE D300 MHEV
