Unusual noise from drivetrain
Why is nothing ever a straight forward fix!!

So I’m getting a strange noise from what I’m pretty certain is the drivetrain. The best way to describe it is like a plastic/tinny flapping/ticking almost like a fan blade catching. It gets slightly louder under load but is there all the time at all speeds. Only present when moving and increases/decreases with the road speed. It’s been in to the local Land Rover specialist this week and they’ve drawn a blank after giving the drivetrain a once over, changed oil in front and rear diffs, transfer case and gearbox, checked uj’s etc.

Both front bearings and swivels have been replaced in the last twelve month so it shouldn’t be related to these.

The mechanics conclusion is that it could be the front diff giving advanced warning that it’s on its way out but I always thought that produced more of a whine.

It’s a 110 td5 2001 with 127k on the drivetrain (75k on the engine). Its stage 2 tuned so will be putting more strain than usual on the drivetrain I just would have thought other components would fail before the diff.

Any thoughts would be appreciated because I’d rather get it sorted than drive it until something goes bang!

Consider that it could be prop shaft u-joints. Remove the front one and drive it then the rear to isolate if you are not sure.

UJ’s are good, the front one was replaced 12 months ago.

I did consider the inner cv joint but there’s no knocking when pulling away or shifting gear and not sure if the click the same as failed outers?

What do you mean by "inner" and "outer" when speaking of CV joints?

12 months is quite long enough for a prop shaft UJ to fail, especially if it was a budget part. I would rule it out without checking.

Diffs can click too. Loose crown wheel bolts for example.
